Staten Island Ferry Crash The City of New York, as the
defendant in the multi-plaintiff injury and wrongful death lawsuit
involving the Oct. 2003 crash tried to invoke limitation of liability.
Though not successful in the legal motion, a successful
decision by the judge could have resulted in the injured
plaintiffs and wrongful death plaintiffs receiving lower money
awards.
The federal judge
hearing the limitation
of liability motion
ruled in favor of the
plaintiffs. If the judge
did not rule the
motion this way, the
city could have
limited its personal
injury and wrongful
death awards to the
post-accident value of
the crashed ferry boat.
