The Foss Maritime website www.foss.com proudly tells the story of
how the company started in 1889 when Andrew and Thea Foss
purchased a used rowboat and started what would eventually
become one of the world’s largest tugboat and towing companies.
Today, Foss operates 90 tugs and 95 barges and provides jobs to
over 1,000 people. Foss operates 8,200 horsepower ocean going
tugs and 8,200 horsepower tractor tugs. In addition, they operate
various types of barges that include deck barges, petroleum barges
and crane barges as well as dredging units. In addition, Foss
operates two shipyards. Foss serves the oil & gas, container, bulk
auto shipping, mining, construction, government & military, grain
and forest products industries.
In a recent press release, Foss announced that it joined the U.S.
EPA’s SmartWay Transport® Partnership to improve energy
efficiency and air quality. Foss mentions that it is the first carrier
accepted into this national program for its marine transportation
services
As part of this partnership, Foss has pledged to reduce 33 to 66
million metric tons of carbon dioxide and up to 200,000 tons of
nitrogen oxide per year by 2012 with environmental improvements
in the performance of its marine operations.
Margo T. Oge, Director of the Office of Transportation and Air Quality
of the EPA announced, “I am pleased to welcome Foss Maritime
Company to the SmartWay Transport Partnership. They join the
Partnership in a commitment to increase fuel efficiency and make
freight-related environmental improvements.”
Foss recruits for the Seattle-Pacific Northwest through its Marine
Personnel Department, at (206) 270-4858. With the exception of
deck officers, the vessel positions are represented in the Pacific
Northwest by the Inlandboatmen's Union of the Pacific. They provide
