Kirby Inland Marine Is Our Featured Employer

Kirby Inland Marine is a major operator of tank barges and towing
vessels on the inland waters of the United States. Kirby vessels
work on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, Mississippi River System,
Illinois River, Ohio River and other inland navigable waters. Kirby
transports chemicals, petroleum products and derivatives. Their
fleet consists of 161 towing vessels and the workforce is made up
of over 1,000 mariners. Kirby is proud to describe itself as a family-
oriented company. Kirby carries styrene, benzene, methanol, liquid
fertilizer, anhydrous ammonia, gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, black
oil products, asphalt, no. 6 oil, coker fuel, and pressurized products
such as butane, propane, and butadiene.

Kirby is recognized for its in-house training, which was a pragmatic
answer to the workboat industry’s manpower shortage. This
shortage was especially apparent after Hurricane Katrina. The
concept is highly commended for its ability to cultivate seasoned
captains from entry-level personnel. The program is praised by
many because the company gets its licensed officers from a crop of
employees who are experienced in the day-to-day operations of
liquid cargo operations. At the same time, an employee who is
fortunate enough to begin on the ground floor with a large company
of this size has a shot at rising through the ranks to ultimately attain
command of a vessel, which comes with an enviable salary.

Kirby Inland Marine also recruits candidates from California
Maritime Academy, Maine Maritime Academy, Massachusetts
Maritime Academy, SUNY Maritime College, Texas A & M University
at Galveston, Northwestern University at Michigan and the U.S.
Merchant Marine Academy. Kirby  gives them a career path to
becoming a 1600 ton captain, starting with their unlimited ocean
third mate’s license. Options for 3rd officer positions on U.S. flag
carriers are competitive, due to the fact that most goods coming into
the U.S. are carried aboard ships registered under the flags of
Liberia, Panama, Monrovia, Vanuatu and other sovereign states.
Kirby’s program is certain to be warmly embraced by the career
development offices of the nation’s maritime schools.

Kirby also embraces army veterans with tug experience. Army
veterans with the 88K20 certification course, 88K30 basic NCO
course, and the 88K40 advanced NCO course under their belts are
encouraged to explore how their experience with army tugs and
utility vessels can make for an attractive career shift into the civilian
world.
