The Great Lakes
Although the job outlook on the Lakes isn't as bright as we'd like it to be, there are
some opportunities we’d like to bring to your attention, even if it’s not what it was a few
years ago. Don’t expect to see the kind of maritime staffing demand seen in the Gulf of
Mexico.
The maritime industry in the lakes is heavily dependent upon the steel industry, and
there isn’t a high demand for steel these days… steel from those parts, anyway. You
then have a domino effect. If steel isn’t in demand, iron ore isn’t in demand, and port
loading employees aren’t in demand. at

And those distinctive looking ore carriers with the pilothouses way forward with the
giant crane booms for unloading taconite pellets… well, unfortunately, their owners
aren’t vigorously scouring the nation for officers and crew. It doesn’t help the bulk ore
carriers that some of the ports are in need of dredging either.
The Great Lakes regions are not what they used to be.Although we’d be thrilled to
tell you that business is booming on the Great Lakes, that isn’t the case. Shipping is
down in the Lakes from previous years.
One of the highlighted employers,
Great Lakes Towing, listed as the
Great Lakes Group below, is
already featured in the section on
inland operators. We know that
already. They’re placed here on
purpose. Aside from being the
largest U.S. flag towing company on
the lakes, they operate a shipyard
that handles large commercial
vessels. Their operations span all
five great lakes…  Lake Ontario,
Lake Erie, Lake Superior, Lake
Michigan and Lake Huron as well
as the St. Lawrence Seaway. They
regularly seek personnel for their
shipyard operations.

We also include Andrie, a large
company headquartered in
Muskegon, Michigan. They handle
Great Lakes projects as well as
maritime projects on the Atlantic
Ocean, Pacific Ocean and Gulf of
Mexico. Erie Shipbuilding, formerly
Litton Shipyards, handles marine
shipbuilding projects involving ATBs
and other large vessels.

We also provide a link to American
Steamship Company. On their
website, they indicate that they hire
their unlicensed seamen through
SIU, Seafarers International Union.
There are additional pages for
stewards, licensed officers and
office personnel. However, we have
to honestly say that we aren’t certain
of their hiring activity currently. As we
come across other employers, we
will be happy to bring them to your
attention. Good luck.
