A ship can sink for any
number of reasons,
sometimes simple ones
and sometimes complex
ones. What ever the
post-accident root cause
analysis may yield in
terms of information, one
basic fundamental
element that is clear is
that steel is denser than
water and that a ship
whose buoyancy and
stability are compromised
will succumb to the
elements. Click

Job Fairs and Job Expos can work for the right person. A
job fair is a good way to bring together a large turnout. It
should be win-win... economical for the employers because
of the volume of prospective applicants they can draw,
practical for the labor end because you can look for work in
10 companies in one shot, and the hotel makes out on the
deal as well with renting a meeting room.  However, most
job fairs are not for employment within the maritime sector.
And some are closed door affairs at schools and colleges.
But, we've spotted a couple that are for the public at large
which we hope could be of value to the right candidate
looking for the right position. Click

Legal IQ

What is a crime... and what
is this concept of
"criminalization" of the
commercial mariners
conduct?
Answer
New York's Hell Gate is
something many East Coast
mariners wouldn't mind
leaving off their trip. There are
other places in the world that
create the same sentiments.

The Charm of the South   They say that home is
where the hearth is... whatever that expression
means. Whether a person is more comfortable living
near the crowds, skyscrapers and subways of the
industrialized and metropolitan Northeast, or near the
rugged beauty and tranquility of the Pacific Northwest,
it's all personal.  Some folks might savor the quiet charm
of Southern cities like Charleston or Beaufort, which
are not too far from Yonges Island, home of

It's a funny thing...  tugboat design has come such a long way since the traditional
harbor tug. Today's modern tugs offer glazed pilothouses with 360 degree visibility,
flush decks and simple box-like superstructures and can turn on a dime with their
sophisticated drive systems.
The advantages of those attributes are undeniable, but still,  there's nothing like the
beauty of a tug from the 50s or 60s. They look like proud ships instead of margarine
tubs. This is well illustrated by the graceful lines of the Kimberly Turecamo.
The Turecamo is operated by Moran Towing and Transportation, featured in the
section East Coast Companies. The Connecticut-based towing company is diverse
and handles a wide array of services. Also check out
