Higman Marine posts openings for a steersman, pilot,
relief captain, deckhand and other positions. Go to
Inland-Gulf-Lakes to learn more.
What's in here? Valuable heirlooms? A rich uncle's last will and
testament? Nothing so lucky... but we don't think you'll be
disappointed. If you go to the section called "Grab Bag", you'll
find an odd assortment of job opportunities that really aren't
necessarily "tugboat jobs" so to speak, but they are nonetheless
of interest (at least that what some of you told us). You'll find jobs
that may be from as unexpected a source as a port authority, oil
rig in the United Arab Emirates, the U.S. Military Sealift
Command, boating supply store, a naval museum and more.
Good luck!
Kirby Inland Marine is a very large inland carrier for bulk
liquid transport. Go to Grab Bag to learn more about

Entertainment Cruises is another employer who is clearly not a tugboat company.
However, they They operate 23 vessels in eight cities. They offer postings for
bartenders, food servers, deckhands, cooks, dishwashers and more. Click here to
learn more about these small dinner cruise ship job opportunites.
Making sure a job is right for
you... we sometimes tend to
think solely in terms of job
descriptions and hourly rates.
That's natural. We all do it.
But for some newbies who
are unacquainted with some
of the work conditions one
can encounter on tugs, we
provide a brief 30 second
walk through an engine room.

Do you work in the

Search, search, search!
We're tired of all this job
hunting for a little bit of work
to pay the rent and buy
some groceries! Right
around now, chilling out in
a nice bar with a nice drink
doesn't sound too bad. And
if the hired help is nice,
well, that's just a bonus!

hired help doesn't appear
right away, you might have

Lubricating Oils
Lubricating
oils serve
a number
of important
purposes in
marine machinery, from
heavy oils in large slow
speed diesels to solid
lubricants in small sealed
gearboxes. Lubricants
reduce friction between
moving parts, carry away
heat, provide a film to
separate moving parts,
prevent corrosion, and
carry away contaminants
resulting from combustion
and metal to metal wear.
A lesser known function of
lubricants is to serve as a
film between wrestlers in
competitive settings. To
illustrate this, we provide
a link to a page with a clip
of female oil wrestling,
following a warning.
I Don't Believe This...
While some people may
see oil wrestling as basic
foolishness that could
relieve some of the stress
of a job search, others
might perceive it as a
serious threat to the
moral fabric of a society.
Therefore the warning
below.
Warning
By clicking the linked text
"wrestling video" at the
end of this paragraph, I
hereby certify that I am
over the age of 18, I would
not offended by, or
sustain emotional
distress by viewing a clip
of women oil wrestling.
Let me watch the video.

What happened to the
Maritrans tug Valour?
She sank in rough seas and
high winds 40 miles from
Wilmington, North Carolina in
2007. Coast Guard
investigation concluded that
one of the factors causing the
tragic loss involved the fuel
tank cross-over valves. Read

Brewers Yacht Yards has a
number of technical and
mechanical positions. They

largest boat facilities with
multiple locations. They

Hornblower Cruises Not a tugboat company? Thanks for pointing that out. But they
are a large employer which regularly seeks people for a broad range of positions,
from operations to customer service to bartending. See Hornblower Cruises to learn
more.
Every cargo officer's worst nightmare... a ship capsizing while loading cargo in icy
waters. The heavy lift vessel Stellamare capsized on the Hudson River on December
9, 2003 while loading electric generators at Albany. In addition to the tragic loss of
three crew members, the incident required an environmental response that involved
Miller Environmental , an environmental response company in New York. Read more
about the incident at the San Francisco Gate .
What do you think of when you see the
words “Gulf Coast”? Do you think crayfish
and the warmth and charm of Southern
Louisiana? Do you think of weather patterns
in the Florida Keys, where it can go from
beach day to violent tropical storm in a matter
of hours? Do you think of the money of Texas
oil, or shrimp boats and their crews relaxing
on deck after a hard week of work?
"What could we fit into this
Grab Bag before the police
come, Ollie?"
'Don't know, but if you check
out the Grab Bag section
(it's on the menu bar as
well), you might find
additional opportunities. It's
kind of a "pot-luck" dinner
section, where you might

guard position to a

We know it's no bed of roses
out there. And that's not just
in the maritime industry. All
across the country, people

The Gulf Coast is so vast, it isn’t possible to
define so simply... the Cajun Queen with the
accordian, the texan with the stetson...
they're all part of the Gulf. We’re keeping our
eye on the region because with year-round
shipbuilding, port operations, and oil and gas
drilling, we think it will be a worthwhile
resource of maritime employment. Click Gulf

We wish we could personally respond to your e-mails... we're really pulling for all of
you, whether we're able to reply to you or not. Although times are hard, we'd like to
point out that there are alternatives to working on a boat... some of which we feature
in the Wild Cards .
We've added a couple of thngs lately. Some are leads that are geographically
focused, with featured employers on the Great Lakes and Gulf of Mexico.
From your e-mails (and again we apologize for not being able to personally answer
every one), we know that our readers come from a wide array of skills and licenses.
Don't be discouraged. Things are upside down for a lot of folks... not because
they're lazy, not because they're unqualified. It's simply the way things have become.
Hang in there. Read about job outlooks take two jobs to make ends meet.
Psst... follow me to some
new leads that just arrived
on the site, at Still More

Research vessel jobs have
always presented alternative
options for deck and engine
job applicants in the tug
industry. The pickings are
slim, but the spectrum of work
is broad... involving anything
from supplying polar
exploration stations in
Antarctica to plucking salinity
samples from the deep
reaches of the Pacific Ocean.

We don't feature information about finding a job aboard Freedom Star, NASA's booster rocket
recovery vessel. That's because such openings don't arise that frequently. However, we do
feature jobs with other government and academic entities in the section research vessels.
You know, the beach is nice

Answer: NOAA - Go To Wild Cards
Inland rivers might be worth checking out. These are
companies that provide bulk transport for coal, chemicals,
solvents, petroleum products and more. They service the
petrochemical industry, asphalt industry, coal industry,
and electric power generation industry. Good luck. See
Inland Rivers & Waterways.
