Eye Protection - Sunglasses - This is a link to an EPA report
"Prevent Eye Damage". A good pair of sunglasses is not a frill
when you work outdoors, especially on the water...all that glare!
A lot of information has been learned about the need to protect
our eyes from ultraviolet radiation. Medical professionals have
emphasized the important role of quality sunglasses in
protecting our eyes. Since sunglasses come in various frames,
materials, lens colors and gradiations of darkening, learn about
what features best fill your needs. And if you've ever lost an
expensive pair of sunglasses overboard, like we have many
times, invest a couple of bucks for one of those holders, like
croakies.
Sunscreen, or Sunblock - Sunscreens, or sunblocks are
something people sometimes associates with beaches and
vacations in the sun. However, sunscreen has been made part
of the work tools of those who work outdoors. If you work on the
deck of a small vessel with no where to go to seek refuge from
the sun, sunscreen can be as vital to safety as a hardhat.
Sunscreens and sunblocks are used to shield the skin from the
sun's ultraviolet rays. With our growing awareness of skin
cancer, and the obvious appreciation of avoiding a painful
sunburn, many boat crews won't home without their sunscreen.
Do you remember the Joseph
Heller novel
Catch-22? It was about
World War II airmen who wanted to
get out of flying B-25 Mitchell
bombers in combat missions over
Italy. However, short of being turned
into chopped meat by anti-aircraft
flak, there was no way to get out of
flying the dangerous missions. If an
airman filedpaperwork to claim that
he was crazy and unfit for duty, the
Army Air Force asserted that anyone
who claimed to be crazy to get out of
combat duty couldn't really be crazy.
All their marbles would have to be in
place to recognize and try to avoid
dangerous combat flight duty. It was
the military's catch-22.
There is a similar concept at work
with some jobs. It can be hard to get
hired without showing experience,
but to get that valuable experience,
someone has to hire you! We've
been seeing this in particular with
entry level unlicensed positions like
deckhands or cooks. The economy
has put a lot of people out of work
and experienced people are
grabbing jobs that would ordinarily
be beneath their stations. We can't
change the situation. However, we
do like to bring attention to entry
level positions that can enable
someone to gain some experience
to put down on a resume. We found
something in the way of a
government food server position at
a naval base. We hope that for the
right candidate, it can be an entry
into the cook department. Go to
Who's Hiring Now (the last button in
the menu bar above) to learn more.
You...  That's right, YOU!
